The Hunter New England & Central Coast Primary Health Network is committed to providing scholarship support to enhance workforce development. 


Expression of Interest For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People 

TAFE NSW & HNECC PHN are working together to offer scholarships to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People who are working, or are interested in working, in Aboriginal Health.

The scholarships are on offer for Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs as well as Certificate IV in Mental Health.

In order to understand the level of support that is needed for students to undertake the scholarships, we require further information from those interested in applying.

When registering your Expression of Interest (EOI) you are under no obligation to enrol, however you will receive extra information to inform the process further.

Central Coast GP Scholarships  



Central Coast GPs can undertake short term paid placements within interesting clinical areas of the Central Coast Local Health District. These placements will offer GPs an opportunity to update their knowledge and skills by working in a supported environment with local experts and their clinical teams.

The program is being conducted in partnership with the Central Coast Local Health District. It comprises a 10-week course / professional development opportunity designed to give GPs:

• An opportunity to improve practice and delivery of services 

• Networking opportunities - building of supportive relationships between the generalist and specialist workforce

• The option of attending in-service education sessions occurring during the placement including multi-professional meetings

• A better understanding of the services available locally, and how to refer to these services

• An increased ability to reflect on and analyse their clinical practice

Scholarship placements are being offered in:

  • Aboriginal Health

  • Alcohol and other Drugs 

  • Geriatrics

  • Paediatrics

  • Palliative Care

Certificate IV Medical Practice Assist


This national accredited program is run annually and conducted in partnership with the University of New England.

Certificate IV Medical Practice Assisting HLT47714, providing practices and candidates with an insight into the competencies and skills required to carry out a medical practice assistant role.

Candidates must be working in a medical practice setting and must have a manager willing to sign off observation reports.

The course is delivered through a mix of online assessments and face-to-face training days.

Health Workforce Scholarship Program (HWSP)


The Health Workforce Scholarship Program (HWSP) provides scholarships and bursaries to help health professionals in rural and remote Australia retain and enhance their skills, capacity and scope of practice. The Program is an initiative of the Australian Government Department of Health, administered in New South Wales by NSW Rural Doctors Network (RDN).

The HWSP is available to medical, nursing, midwifery, allied health, dental and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health professionals providing primary health care in the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS) sector, non-government organisations and private practice.

The HWSP offers two types of funding:

  • Scholarships: A payment up to $10,000 per year, for up to two years, toward the cost of completing a postgraduate course leading to a postgraduate qualification
  • Bursaries: A payment up to $10,000 (maximum of $10,000 in total in one year) for professional development and upskilling course fees and associated accommodation and travel-related expenses
